Google fun

At the outset - a thank you to the unknown visitor who made my day! If you read this, please do contact me through my email / comment on the site - would like to personally convey my thanks for your visit.

This was supposed to be a quick in-an-out - check my site and out again but turned out to be more fun than I’ve had in a long time with Google. I was looking at the statistics and logs - with participation in two carnivals, better to make sure that all works well.

Browsing through the referrer logs when I spot an interesting entry - some one did a search on google and then came here! Someone visited after googling “charity pixel pages”.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=charity+pixel+pages&meta=.

And there it was - my post on Climbing an Elongating Tail. About 4 links down from the top. Whatever the reason for the search, he or she ended up clicking on my link.

Search engine lore says that if your site isn’t within the top 10 results in any search, the chances of getting inbound clicks drops drastically. And here I am - the 4th most relevant site about charity pixel pages. I’m nothing when it comes to ordinary pixel pages, but on charity… probably because there are about 24 million links for pixel pages, but only 137,000 for charity pixel pages.

Having hit google, without any other search in mind, thought I’d just play around a little with some other search terms - could I find my site through google? About 10 minutes and a bunch of abortive searches later, Bingo!

Please google the phrase Elongating Tail. No quotes needed. The url is here for your convenience.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=elongating+tail&meta=

You’ll find 2cworth.com there - right on top. The first search link - and there are NO sponsored links in between. 2¢ Worth is the authority on Elongating Tails. Google says so. Leading a pack of 49,000 links. I’m nowhere when it comes to Long Tail though - 24 million links. I gave up after a hundred.

I’m even worse when it comes to 2¢ Worth. 174 million links. Anyone know a quick way to find out how far down the line I’d be?

And to think I registered this domain. It’s all Google’s fault. They should have told me what they considered my expertise.

Jokes apart, I’d like to personally thank the unknown visitor. I do hope you enjoyed your visit here, and that you found whatever you were looking for.

Thanks also to Jim and John, the hosts for the two carnivals.

And to the two unknown individuals who have subscribed to this blog’s feed through bloglines. Do let me know how you find this, and feel free to suggest improvements. Have a great day.

Thanks for the honorable mention with the debt carnival posting :)

But, to your question on whether you can find out your ranking quicker - yes you can. Try this tool: http://www.mcdar.net/KeywordTool/keywordtool.asp

It’s quite handy.
