Gadget freebies
While on gadgets; yes, they do cost a fair bit, and in some cases insidiously so, especially when linked with services like net access.
I had an offer a few weeks ago to switch internet service providers; a much faster speed, a free laptop thrown in, additional services and promotional vouchers. I’ve been meaning to junk my old Celeron 400 and wondering whether to get a replacement or do without a laptop for personal use; this offer seemed to make everything easy. Just pay an additional 25 bucks a month because of the faster speed - even if I were to upgrade with my existing provider, I’d have the same cost anyway, and here was a laptop free!
That’s where the comparisons hide the truth; yes, the same price for the speed, with a free laptop. But did I need the extra speed? Not really; I’m quite comfortable with my existing ADSL line. To switch, I’d have to add the costs of a cable modem and the internal wiring for the internet point - coupled with the contract period, I’d spend about $800 - $1000 more over the next two years, to get a laptop which retails for around $500!
It isn’t about comparing like to like. You have to compare it with what you’re currently having - and whether there’s a burning need to change the status quo.
Oh, and the “free” iPod Nano I got last week; it actually cost me $50, but I figured I could indulge to that extent. No burning need, but sometimes you can give in to your wants. Just be sure you can afford it, know what it costs you; and don’t give in too often! Sometime shouldn’t become all the time.

Good job on figuring out the true cost of the computer and ipod. Nothing is ever free.
