Money down the toilet!

A news item about waste in federal spending has these shockers :

Some of the other “bridge to nowhere” projects identified in the CAGW’s “Pig Book” include:

$13,500,000 for the International Fund for Ireland, which helped finance the World Toilet Summit.
$1,000,000 for the Waterfree Urinal Conservation Initiative.

There are others, too - according to the press release, there’s over $3.4 billion in 375 pork barrel projects.

And we wonder why the debt’s ballooned to over $8 trillion?

While I agree that this pork is ridiculous and should never happen, it’s pretty hard to blame the deficit on it. I mean, it is 0.6% of the federal deficit for this year. Cutting it out would be good, but it would hardly show up in the bottom line — and do almost nothing for the national debt. Now, I’m not going to get into an argument over whether programs should be cut or taxes increased, but lets just say that it’s likely that both will have to happen if anyone ever really gets serious about balancing the budget and reducing the debt…
