Affording a recession?

An intriguing question from Make Love, Not Debt - Can America afford the next recession?

There’s a corollary - can the world afford it? Like it or not, US consumption drives a large part of the world economy - be it gas from the Middle East, electronics from China or Taiwan, or outsourced services from India.

Which is probably why the world continues to fund the deficit.
