Teaching children the value of money?

What’s the best way YOU have found to teach children the value of money?

I learnt it the hard way;didn’t have any! Pocket money, that is. Any necessities were budgeted for, other things we did without. It wasn’t pleasant, but it did make sure that every penny was pinched.

The situation’s a little different today; while not rich, I do make a decent income. And with every child getting pocket money from their parents, it seems unnecessarily cruel to deprive my children. At the same time, I don’t want to have them learn that money comes easy.

More on this tomorrow - right now, I’d like to find out what other parents have done.
